Douliana - Gavalohori

Apokoronas is a miniature of the Cretan nature. From the coastal zone, which is adorned with dentelated beaches, small picturesque bays and impressing steep rocks, to the foot of the mountain. The unique landscape is the main reason why the area has become particularly popular in recent years.

From the roundabout of the national road to Kalami, the landscape excites the visitor. The magical Souda Bay extends in front of us and the homonymous islet with its Venetian castle looks like a valuable gem that shines in the sun. Through the picturesque small village, we go downhill to Kalyves, admiring the view of the plain with the silver highlights of the olive groves and the vineyards and the incredible blue of the sea. Through the narrow roads of Kalyves, with the beautiful neoclassical buildings, we continue in the country road, with direction to Vamos.

At the roundabout to Gavalohori we turn left and after a while we turn left again with direction to Ntouliana. We leave the car at the small square of the village, in front of a traditional cafe and we follow the old cobbled road in the village, turning right at a downhill path. The thick vegetation soon spreads its coolness, making the route pleasant any time of the year. When the downhill road ends, we find ourselves in the ravine. On the right, we encounter a small church, built in the rock. At the yard of the church grows an olive tree with a really strange trunk. There was a cemetary once at this church, where unbaptized children were buried. The route continues a little downhill and the ravine opens.

We walk next to rocks and plates in the earth, which’ were used by the excellent masters to build the elaborate houses at Gavalohori. As we arrive at Gavalohori, there are many choices. Beautiful churches, houses, cafes and an interesting folk museum. Spend time to walk the narrow streets and have a look at the internal yards with the fantastic gardens. After you have a rest at the square of the village its worth going uphill to Pigadia. You remain at the central road which, at the end of the uphill part, leads to the left and after 20 minutes you will see some built wells in the shade of enormous plane trees on the right side of the road but also on the left side, as well as an old stone-built bridge.
